Esophageal & Anorectal Manometry
Esophageal and anorectal manometry are diagnostic tests used to evaluate the function of the muscles and nerves in the esophagus and anorectum, respectively. Both tests are essential in diagnosing motility disorders, which can cause various gastrointestinal symptoms.
Procedure:
- A thin, flexible tube with pressure sensors is passed through the nose, down the esophagus, and into the stomach.
- The patient is asked to swallow, and the sensors measure the pressure and coordination of muscle contractions in the esophagus as well as the function of the LES.
Anorectal Manometry:
Procedure:
- A small, flexible catheter with a balloon at the end is inserted into the rectum.
- The balloon is inflated to measure the sensation, reflexes, and pressure of the anal sphincter muscles.
- The patient may be asked to squeeze, relax, and push to assess the coordination of the muscles.
